During MCH2022 we organized a CTF as well as a Secret Tokens challenge. Both ran from the start of MCH2022 till the very end, and both were a huge success with a lot of MCH2022 visitors joining both of the activities.

A total of 800+ teams signed up for the CTF, from which 463 teams actually managed to score some points. These 463 teams solved 3377 challenges in total and the most solved challenge (Misc – For Starters) was solved by 346 of those teams.

The hardest challenge turned out to be our badge challenge “Hack Me If You Can”, but it still got two solves during the CTF, an impressive feat by the teams ChaosWest (link) and Bratzenamt (link). Player wallaby (link) solved the badge challenge a couple of days after the event, but created a noteworthy write-up as well. For other CTF write-ups check out: https://github.com/craig/MCH2022-CTF/blob/main/README.md

More than 100 teams played onsite (note: teams, not individual players), and a lot of these onsite players joined our CTF tent for the onsite challenges and the great atmosphere. Most of the time all seats were filled from early in the morning till far in the night, and we even got people sitting on the ground outside of the CTF tent. The enthusiasm the players showed and seeing the players come back each day really made it all worth the time and energy to build this all.

The final scoreboard showing the top 15 teams can be seen below.

The new Secret Token challenge was a huge success as well with some players getting really enthusiastic and trying to “catch them all”. The Secret Token challenge further turned out to be a nice bridge to the CTF for some players (and the other way around).

A total of 49 different tokens were added to the database, of which 48 tokens were found by the players. Some only a couple of times, and one token was not found at all. While this token was actually hidden in plain sight. The ‘missing’ token could be found on the long MCH2022 flags, of which 4 could be found on the campgrounds. See the image accompanying this post for the Secret Token on the flag.

The Secret Token challenge was played on an individual basis instead of teams like the CTF. In total 380 players submitted at least 1 token, in total these players submitted 2160 tokens. The most found token was secret{togetyoustarted}, which could be found in the booklet. This token was found 204 times.

The top player (DEX) found 30 tokens, resulting in 41 points, with the top 10 scoring 39-41 points. The full top 10 of the Secret Tokens challenge can be seen below.

We want to thank all the players which participated in the CTF and/or the Secret Tokens challenge. Just like the participants, we learned a lot during this CTF, and we will use the lessons learned to create an even better experience in 2025. Because of the large number of players at the CTF tent we will definitely scale up in 2025 to accompany even more of you.

In 2025 we would also like to coordinate the multiple activities such as CTFs and onsite scavenger hunt-type of games better. We noticed there were multiple activities which now were ‘competing’ against each other instead of combining all energy to create the best experience for all the visitors.

See you all in 2025 for more games and challenges!

During MCH2022 we organized a CTF as well as a Secret Tokens challenge. The human civilisation is standing at a precipice, facing the geo-political fallout of the pandemic, steeply-rising inequality, looming climate change crisis and the spectre of biosystem collapse. While it may seem far away on a beautiful summer day, the challenges are very real and will not go away if we ignore them. Many members of the community are aware of these challenges and are worried. What can I do to ensure that I and my loved ones are safe?

Emergent.Earth village is a meeting place and open public stage to discuss the future of the planet and human society on it, and explore the role that we as hackers can play in making it better.

You are invited to come and join the discussions, share your thoughts and feelings about the climate crisis in a (short) talk or just hang out with like-minded people and ponder the blue orb.

Currently, the programme consists of workshops and discussions every day from 15:00-17:00. On Friday the theme will be Gravity, where we explore the seriousness of the situation based on the best current science. On Saturday the theme is Emotion, where we will explore how the sustainability crisis affects how we feel and how do we jointly deal with those emotions. On Sunday the theme is Hope, when we will explore various developments that show a way forward and explore things you can do yourself. These sessions are synchronised with our friend at The New Hope event in New York, and we will include them in the discussions.

Please consider this blog post as a mini Call for Proposals. And what better to keep you warm than a warm, comfortable MCH2022-themed hoodie? And otherwise, during the day, wouldn’t you want a MCH2022-themed cap to protect you when the sun is blasting down on your head?

Well, then today’s blog post has good news for you, as we present the MCH2022 purchasable apparel. It uses the MCH design to create unique festival wear, and features the usual lineup of a t-shirt, a hoodie, a zippered hoodie, a baseball cap and, because of unexpected popularity during the MCH2021 run, a safari hat! Let’s go over them one by one.

Size tables are at the bottom of this page. Get yours here!

The hoodie comes in two fits and a zippered and non-zipper variant. It is a raglan model, with the kaleidoscopic triangle motif on the left sleeve. The other arm features a MCH2022 logo patch. Scattered all over the hoodie are technical drawings of prisms and kaleidoscopes. On top of that, on the back is an embroidered butterfly whose wings split white light into a band of MCH colors.

Although the hoodie is nice and comfy, sometimes you want something cooler. Therefore there is a t-shirt, in three fits (regular, fitted and child). It is also a raglan with a colored sleeve and a patch on the other sleeve. The butterfly is printed on the front, and the back shows where you got the t-shirt. 🙂

These head coverings come in two styles: a printed baseball cap with a patch and some decorative triangles, and a fabric safari hat with a patch and triangles on the brim.

When you order the apparel, you will be able to pick it up in the field at the merch stand, on the Flowers field, next to Symphony of FIRE, just acros the lake where you entered the field. There will be a range of other thematic shirts on sale. Delivery is not possible at this moment. If you want to be guaranteed your unique shirt, hoodie or hat, make sure to grab yours now at the ticket shop!

Hacker camps can be cold at night. risk at MCH. Prevalence of COVID in the Netherlands is rising, and it’s likely to still be quite prevalent during the event.

We strongly encourage you to:

We recommend all attendees to be up to date on their COVID vaccinations. Vaccination reduces your chances of catching COVID, and reduces your chances of spreading COVID if you do catch it.

If you test positive for COVID in the days before the event, please don’t attend. Because we can not, and do not want to process medical information, we are not able to refund your tickets. Therefore we advise taking travel insurance with a cancellation policy. There is also the ticket exchange.

If you experience symptoms of COVID during the event, please take a rapid test — if you don’t have one, the First Aid tent will give you one for free.

If somebody in your village, or another near contact, tests positive, please reduce risk, and do not skip that daily rapid test.

A positive rapid test means that you are likely contagious. If you test positive for COVID, please wear a mask, take great care to avoid close contact with other attendees, and leave the event as soon as you are able to. Even mild COVID won’t be fun if you’re stuck in a tent.

If you need assistance, call MCH emergency response teams by DECT at 911 and by GSM at +31 (0)85 234 1120.

We’re paying particular attention to ventilation of our tents. Track tents will have extra non-entrance openings in the sides.

We’ll provide plenty of places for you to wash your hands, with running water, alcohol-based disinfectant, and soap.

Toilets and showers will be cleaned regularly.

We will encourage the use of face masks, especially in enclosed areas. Disparaging remarks to people that wear face masks are not welcome.

We have made Rapid Antigen Tests available to staff and volunteers.

For visitors from outside of the EU, check the requirements for travel to the Netherlands on the official government website, here: https://www.government.nl/topics/c/coronavirus-covid-19/visiting-the-netherlands-from-abroad

Covid policy is under constant evolution. The CTF consists of multiple hacking-related challenges across multiple difficulty levels and is once again organized by the same team that organized the OHM2013 and SHA2017 CTFs. However, this year the CTF will have a stronger focus on the onsite visitors of MCH2022. The CTF contains multiple beginner and intermediate challenges, and is also suitable if you have never played a CTF before. It further contains on-site challenges which you can find in the CTF tent, where you can also get some help with the challenges or play together with other players.

There will be no strict start time or end time – the CTF will be active during the whole MCH2022 event. While online players are invited to join the CTF as well, we focus on the on-site players including on-site-only challenges. And we as Team Decoration (or Deco for short) aim to bring some visual creativity to the field in order to enhance this experience for you! We have a variety of awesome projects in the works that you should look out for on the field – the image below shows a few of them.

From left to right, top to bottom, left to right:

We have more in the works that we would love to show you at the event itself 🙂

You might notice that coloured film is common across multiple projects. This is because I had seen this film in action in 2019 on a small scale which sparked my curiosity. So I went ahead and ordered 60 meters of the stuff to apply on the Crystal Obelisk project to see how it would look. We were so impressed with the result that we decided to apply it to other projects as well.

A big challenge for us all was staying motivated while we were in the first years of the pandemic. Team:Deco is not a team that is spun up a few months before the event – we started planning 1.5 years ago. Having so much uncertainty about 2021 when MCH was initially supposed to take place, along with the general challenge of staying sane, was incredibly draining. We altered our planning around this, dropping projects that would take a long time to prepare in advance and only keeping the projects that would fit within a time span of six months to complete.

As a team leader, I am very happy with the progress made so far, we have already completed more at this point than we did for SHA2017. Being able to build upon my past experience and lessons learned from SHA2017 was very useful.

What is left to do is mostly production work and arranging some details. While the April 1 blog post about the spherical MCH Payment System was clearly an April 1 joke, this post addressed a few sticking points of the previous Dutch camps such as SHA2017 and OHM2013. Namely, plastic coins are quite annoying and not super practical. We strive to make your experience better every time!

Therefore it is possible to exchange cash on the field for a QR code for payment instead of plastic coins. It is also possible to directly use a bank card.

Unfortunately, we have to admit that dealing with currency is expensive and complicated. How you look at it, and whether it concerns change machines, manufacturers, rental companies, rules regarding money laundering, or hygiene (COVID). We see that card payments, are becoming increasingly popular as a hygienic and cheap alternative to cash. And we are happy to join in: MCH2022 will be a (largely) cashless event! No more plastic coins to exchange, no more cash to process.

All outlets (bars, food, merchandise, etc.) will have a proper EFT terminal where you can pay with your usual cards. We are currently aiming to accept all major debit and credit cards (VISA, Mastercard, American Express) via tap, chip, or even swipe. Are you using a chic wearable with a payment function? We’ll accept that too!

An important question – and rightly so – might be, “What about anonymity? Now, does everyone know what I’ve spent my money on?” The answer to that is, and we’ll be honest here: No, not everyone.

There are always several parties involved in card payments. For simplicity, we’ve compressed all the involved parties into two: the merchant (that’s MCH2022, on behalf of the IFCAT Foundation) and the card networks. Detailed details can be found on the long read on the wiki.

We are well aware that for a privacy-conscious visitor using a payment card may not be an option at all and we sympathize with that assessment.

In addition to payment by card, we will be offering a select number of payment points (and possibly even an unattended machine – to be explored) that will allow visitors to exchange cash (EUR only) for a QR code of In addition to using an easy payment method, we promise to offer full refunds for unused balances on QR vouchers at the end of the event. And as this is the first time an electronic payment system has been used at MCH, we’re also looking forward to making purchase data available for creative use. Why not extend our Grafana Dashboards with near real-time information about Tschunks usage per hour? Or automatically warn the logistics warehouse when the Mate at the bar is almost finished? We admit that this topic has enough facets to ask for more information or clarification. Do not hesitate to write your questions to tickets@mch2022.org and we will answer you directly and expand the FAQ or the page on the wiki where necessary.

On April 1st we introduced the MCH Payment System, a spherical, robust, and efficient way to pay for anything, everywhere, forever.

But… Recently there has been a major breakthrough from our chief scientist at the MCH Payment System Laboratories Inc. Late at night, after too much Tschunk, the chief engineer stumbled upon something new. Literally: they slipped, fell over, cut and smashed the plastic ball from under their feet, and saw the future! And that future was…flattened.

The chief engineer melted as many Payment System balls together as possible. Going completely mad from the Non-Toxic™ fumes, they laughed maniacally with eyes wide open. Thin sheets of plastic started coming out at high velocity, stacking all the way up to the ceiling.

The next day the scientists found the chief engineer laying on the floor, a neat stack of small cards next to them. The scientists shrugged, looked at each other, and said, “Yet another Tuesday, it will be fine.”

They didn’t like the waste, especially those stupid rectangular cards, which they just shipped-off to one of their dumber clients as a Premium Product. And that’s that. As a tribute to chief-scientists-on-Tuesday around the globe, our payment system will be Flat!

While the blog post published on April 1st obviously was an April Fool’s joke, it did contain a few real moot points of the previous Dutch camps such as SHA and OHM – plastic coins are quite annoying and not super practical. So while we are aiming to make things better this year, we can already confirm the rumors that it won’t be by virtue of plastic balls in fabric nets (but we expect attempts will be made, as not everyone on site might have heard the plastic balls have been replaced…

As we teased in our earlier post, we will have a very special audio setup in Abacus. We have, through some good luck and connections, been able to secure a Holoplot X1 sound system. If you have been paying close attention to the Pro-Audio market you might be already excited, however for the rest of you, we will try to explain why we are so eager to talk about it.

You will most likely be familiar with line arrays, whether you know the term or not. Chances are you have seen columns of speakers hung either side of a stage, most likely curved in a ‘J’ shape. The reason for this is to control where the the sound goes. We want sound to reach the audience, but not bounce off surfaces like the back wall creating unwanted echos that reduce your ability to understand or recognize the sound. Line arrays are able to control sound propagation in the vertical dimension which means we can at least avoid the back wall.

What Holoplot introduces is a new concept, the ‘matrix array’, which utilizes 3D Audio-Beamforming to provide control in both vertical and horizontal directions. When we add horizontal control we can also avoid the side walls and other surfaces. In fact because we have so much command over the sound waves we can hit surfaces on purpose for creative effect.

In addition to 3D Audio-Beamforming a Holoplot Matrix Array can employ Wave Field Syntheses to deliver life-like perception of audio objects, creating deeply immersive experiences. Unlike a panning-based approach, such as 5.1 surround sound, the localization of an audio object works well in the entire audience area rather than just a small spot in the middle of the room.

At MCH2022 you will be able to A/B test a conventional line array against a matrix array, as the Abacus and Battery tents are identical except for the sound system.

Abacus will be equipped with with two 3×2 arrays on either side of the stage. Each array will be made up of 4 X1 MD80-S and 2 X1 MD96 modules. Yes, we will have 8 subwoofers in Abacus! Ideally we would have a central array and more height which would offer better beam-forming performance but since we are in a tent, we will just have to do something awesome within these constraints.

First priority is stereo, using coverage optimized beams to hit the audience and very little else. What that should mean is that you can understand what is being said much better with less reverb from the tent. It should also reduce bleed which will keep the surrounding areas a bit quieter.

Second priority is zoning, which means we can run multiple streams of content next to each other. For example a Dutch half and an English half of the audience. We would like to achieve at least two zones.

Third priority is interesting creative things with the audio (‘hacks’) like placing audio objects arround the tent to be discovered between talks. We are open for ideas and content here.

What we achieve will depend on the time we have available to tune during build up. So the more of you that volunteer for buildup, the more cool stuff we can try.

Each Holoplot Module is a fully-fledged ARM computer with two FPGAs and six amplifiers driving 96 (MD96) or 80 (MD80-S) transducers, with an array of sensors measuring everything from tilt to temperature. To scale 3D Audio-Beamforming and Wave Field Synthesis, the unique audio for each driver has to be processed on the module. This leads to interesting challenges like making sure the module knows where it is in relation to other modules, the audience area(s) and various other aspects of the environment. Naturally there has to be software to bring up, monitor and maintain such a system, all of which run on a Poky-derived Linux distribution maintained in-house at Holoplot. You will find an ever growing set of open source components at github.com/holoplot.

We are always on the look out for helpers from buildup right the way through to teardown, so please get in touch and sign up for shifts during the event. It’s a very good way to make friends and maybe learn about AV tech in practice.

As we teased in our earlier post, we will have a very special audio setup in Abacus. We have tried to improve upon previous events and have a few special ‘things’ planned.

Almost all of the events in the three main stages will be streamed live, and recordings will be published for later viewing at media.ccc.de. The streaming infrastructure (cameras, video mixing, CDN, etc) is again being provided by C3VOC, the CCC video team. Our goal is to have all recorded presentations publicly released before the end of the last day.

All three main stages will have a projection screen behind the stage and several large LED TVs at the rear of the tent. Workshop tents will have one large LED TV capable of handling a more-or-less daylight environment.

Audio is where we have planned a few specials. The Abacus stage will have a very special audio system that will be described soon in a future blog post. If it all goes to plan we will have something very special and unique that has hardly been done in the world, let alone at an event like MCH2022.

Battery and Clairvoyance will have a more conventional audio system, but for Battery we are planning something special during the evenings. In order to minimize audio bleed to our neighbours (on the field and beyond) we are going to build a Silent Stage. Late at night the volume of the main audio system will be turned down to nothing and only the headphones supplied by us (just like a silent disco system) will receive a signal. We will have a limited supply of headphones, but if all goes well, you should also be able to use a normal handheld FM radio with headphones.

We need a lot of angels to help us (that means you!). Many attendees are counting on the presentations to be recorded and streamed so they can enjoy them at any time or place during or after the event. This is only possible if we have a lot of volunteers who operate cameras, audio and video mixers or monitor various online channels for questions during Q&A. Whether you have experience or not, would like to start learning a new skill, come and join us on the day before the formal start of the event at the AV angel introduction. You can always talk to us later during the event for a quick 1-on-1 introduction if you can’t make the initial session. More information and details in a future blog post.

If you are presenting at MCH2022 and your presentation is super cool, but differs from the usual format of one or two presenters and a laptop, please talk to your contact within Team Content about contacting us. If you are already in contact with us, there’s no need to initiate a new conversation.

Just like 5 years ago at SHA2017 the Productiehuis team is taking care of the audio/visual equipment around the three main stage tents (Abacus, Battery and Clairvoyance), the Workshop tents, the Bar tents and several other locations. It’s an easy-to-use tool to play around with and generate beautiful designs. Try it if you haven’t yet!

The design for the flags uses this tool, but in a slightly different way than you might expect. In this blog post I will tell you how and give you some elements you could play around with yourself.

The inspiration for the design is the idea of a “kaleidoscope of hackers“. As hackers we are all different, we focus on different things, we bring different things to an event like MCH2022… The flags used at the event should represent this kaleidoscope, which led to the idea of incorporating the full kaleidoscope into the flag design. And with the colour scheme that was handed over to the design team, it was a small step to a rainbow-inspired kaleidoscopic flag theme that represents the multifacetedness of the hacker community.

A flag that looked somewhat like the above was born, which led to a poster, which led to all kinds of other things. Now, the hexagons you see here look slightly different from those in the design generator; they have not been altered in dimension, but they have been rotated 90 degrees.

Every single hexagon represents some aspect of the hacker community and the elements that make MCH2022. These aspects are represented by a word that I used in the design generator to get a hexagonal design. I isolated a hexagon from each design, and built a design out of all of them.

Keep in mind, every aspect I used as inspiration, was needed to generate a hexagon that looked aesthetically pleasing in the overall design. And I needed a certain amount of each colour too. This has influenced the words used. There was no way I could be fully inclusive. If you miss certain words, add them at the event by making your own flags and designs!

In the next image and the following table you will find all the words that inspired the final designs. Every rainbow-coloured-hexagon-fest design you find at the event will be built out of these elements (but we’re keeping the exact designs secret for a little longer 🙂 ):

Or to make it more readable:

The hoodies

• CaptureTheFlag – A CTF about all things biohacking. Designed for those at the entry level to advanced, including non-technical challenges for those who might be interested but don’t know where to start.
• Device Lab – Ever wondered what security is like on a drug infusion pump? A cardiac programmer? That neat-looking fume hood? While the logistics of having devices in person aren’t going to work out, we have
the next best thing, a virtual device lab. Take the Hippocratic Oath for Hackers, download the VPN and be able to attack real medical devices. Find something? There will be contact information and support
available to tell the manufacturer about it, and ensure it gets fixed.
• Swag – What conference is complete without it? Stop by for some stickers, and an activity/coloring book.
• Talks and workshops – Of course, we will also have some talks about medical device hacking, regulations and other interesting medical-related stuff. And there will also be workshops to put your newfound knowledge into practice (schedule will be announced soon).

Why not plastic coins or cash?

In the end, it’s all about comfort and saving operational costs that can be reinvested in cooler things like flamethrowers or colorful LEDs.

I’d like to talk to your manager!
